Made by Malcom Reed of howtobbqright.com and his BBQ team, it blends together a great mix of sugar, salt, heat and other spices to give a great all round rub that can be used for anything. We’ve used this countless times when cooking up a Pork Butt for pulled pork and it has never failed us.
The Killer Hogs Championship BBQ Team have spent years perfecting this BBQ dry rub to you don’t have to. It gives a great bark to any meat it’s used on and gives one of the most balanced, consistent tastes you can buy. We definitely recommend.

The Plowboys BBQ Yardbird rub was developed after winning the 2009 American Royal BBQ competition. It’s a great tasting rub that is perfect for chicken, ribs or pork. It has a perfect balance of sweet and spicy and we think it one of the best rib rubs you can buy today. Some people find that if you add too much then it gives a slightly salty flavor, but we disagree. We think a lot of this rub is the best way to go. If you think it has too much salt, then add a bit of brown sugar to the mix to even the taste.
Main ingredients: Salt, Sugar, Chili pepper, Paprika, Garlic, Onion, mustard flour
Plowboys do a nice range of different rubs and sauces. They have a BBQ sauce that we love and a Bovine Bold rub that we think makes a great companion to brisket. If you’re looking for the best value Yardbird rub, then they sell a 5lb bag at a very reasonable price.
Bad Byron’s Butt Rub is an authentic Texas style BBQ rub that offers a smoky, traditional flavor. As you can probably tell from the name, picture and the slogan Bad Byron’s Butt Rub is a brilliant choice for pork butt and pulled pork. But it’s versatile enough to be used for whole range of food. It works just as well with chicken, seafood and makes a great rib rub.
Main Ingredients: onion, garlic, salt, pepper, paprika and chipotle seasoning.
This is a gluten free BBQ rub that has been used by championship barbecues, professional chefs, and backyard cooks everywhere. If you’re looking to try it out, there’s a 4.5 ounce jar. They also do 26 ounce jars and a big 7 lb tub.
The Grill Mates Smokehouse Maple rub is a great choice for chicken and pork. It’s got a lighter, sweeter flavor that works very well with whiter meats and even fish. It can be used just a well as a seasoning for anything, rather than a specific rub. Even though it’s light on the classic BBQ taste, it still tastes smoky. It’s made with completely natural herbs and spices, is gluten free, and has not MSG or artificial flavors or colors added.
Main Ingredients: Brown sugar, maple syrup, onion, garlic and orange peel.
Grill mates have a huge range of products to choose from but this is our favorite from the ones we’ve tasted.
The Legion of Spice Black n’ Bluesy is one of the more unique rubs on the list. It’s a mixture of Cajun and blue cheese. Whilst that might not sound like the most natural mix, this is one of the best tasting rubs we’ve ever tasted and we think that this is one that almost everyone will enjoy. Neither flavor is too strong, yet the overall taste is powerful and unforgettable. It’s hugely versatile and we think works amazingly well on smoked chicken wings.
Main Ingredients: Blue Cheese Powder, Sweet Paprika, 5 Peppercorn Mix, Smoked Spanish Paprika, Garlic, Oregano, Thyme, Onion, Basil, Cayenne, Aji Amarillo, Cumin, Mediterranean Sea Salt
Not only is this one of the best tasting rubs we’ve tried, but it’s also one of the healthiest. It has all natural ingredients and no artificial filler what-so-ever. Not only that but 10% of the profits made from this will go to charities dedicated to feeding the hungry. We highly recommend buying from Legion of Spice’s large range of products.
BBQ doesn’t have to be the same Southern flavors every time. If Cajun and blue cheese wasn’t enough for you then Spiceologist’s Tandoori Glory BBQ Rub may well be. This is a great rub for absolutely any occasion. But it works surprising well on BBQ. We tried smoking up some chicken wings and some pork butt covered in Tandoori Glory and it came out amazingly well. It’s obviously very different to traditional BBQ but we think it makes a welcome change.
Main Ingredients: Ground coriander, ground cumin, ground cinnamon, garam masala, ground ginger, sweet paprika, ground turmeric, garlic powder, white pepper, ground cardamom, cayenne, brown sugar, kosher salt
If you haven’t tried smoking a piece of salmon on your smoker then you’re really missing out. Even more so if you haven’t tried the salmon Rub from Rub with Love. This is one of the best salmon rubs we’ve tried but can be used for all sorts of fish or seafood. It also goes really well with chicken or pork by adding a smoky, slightly sweet, flavor.
Main ingredients: Smoked paprika, thyme, brown sugar.
Rub with Love also do a chicken rub and steak rub that are equally as good. If you’re looking to try them out there Is a convenient multipack available to give you a taste of each. They also have a large range of rubs and seasonings, including a more traditional smoky barbecue rub.
The Szeged Rib Rub is one of the best dry rub for ribs we’ve ever tasted. It enhances the natural flavor of the ribs and gives it a slightly spicy bite. The spices originate from Hungary and give a taste that is unique and full of flavor. The rub even comes in a really nice looking, old fashioned tin.
Main ingredients: Salt, paprika, garlic, mustard, sugar, and spices.
Of course, it can be used for many other cuts of meat. We’d suggest keeping it pork or beef though, that’s where we’ve had the most success. Also, if you find it too salt then we’d suggest adding some brown sugar. There is definitely a stronger salt taste and when using lots of the rub it might be a bit overpowering. Despite that, it’s still our best rib rub.
If you’re looking for a variety of spicy flavors that can give you a nice variety when it comes to your BBQ then the Seasonest Keep it Hot Variety pack will be perfect for you. Each rub has a uniquely different flavor that works best with different meats, but they all have a nice kick of spice that you can really feel after a few bites.
The flavors are: Spicy, Jerk, Adobo, Soul Food and Lemon Fire. Our favourite was probably the Lemon Fire. It had a sweet lemon flavor and then a huge kick of cayenne pepper. Perfect for any chicken.
Let us know what you think of the selection and if you’re tried any of them.
