ThermoPro TP-19 Thermometer Review – ThermoPro TP-19 vs Thermapen
ThermoPro are the creators of one of our favorite and most used products, the ThermoPro TP-20. So, when ThermoPro came to us telling us that they have a new product that’s aiming to provide an affordable alternative to the much loved Thermapen, we were very eager to see what they had created. The Thermapen is one of our highest rated products and is universally considered one of the best thermometers on the market, so ThermoPro have a lot to prove. Let’s see how the ThermoPro TP-19 compares to the Thermapen.
ThermoPro kindly provided a ThermoPro TP-19 in return for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions herein are my own and are not influenced by the related company in any way.

What’s included with the ThermoPro TP-19?
The only things included with the ThermoPro TP-19 are:
- The Thermometers itself
- Instructions and packaging
Whilst this isn’t really a feature, it is the reason that the ThermoPro TP-19 exists – the price. The standard price for the TP-19 is $25. Compared to the Thermapen, this is around 3 times less. A great starting point to keep in mind when you see the rest of the features they’ve managed to include in this little package.
The TP-19 aimed to match the super quick response time of the Thermapen and they’ve done just that. They claim read times of around 2-3 and when testing we found this to be pretty accurate. When the two thermometers were tested next to each other the screens matched almost identically during the readings.
The accuracy of the TP-19 is also very impressive. It’s rated at ±0.9°F, which is a little worse than the Thermapen but honestly it’s barely noticeable.
One of the best parts of the Thermapen is the display and the TP-19 is just as good, but for different reasons. Firstly, it shows numbers to 1 decimal place so it has a nice precision. The screen is also very bright and clear. It has a rotating function but only rotates in steps of 180° rather than the Thermapen’s better 90°.
It has a very convenient lock button that works as a way to hold to value on the display. This is actually one of the most useful functions out of all of them and we found ourselves using it regularly. It’s also very intuitive, locking with a single button press and unlocking with a second press.
In addition to all of these here’s a few more handy little features that are included:
- IP67 waterproof
- There are sleep and wake functions that are used to help save the battery.
- It has an included calibration function.
- Food grade stainless steel probe
- Magnetic back
- Kitchen hook
- Antimicrobial coating
- Meat temperature chart on the back (like a mini version of our cheat sheet)
- Fahrenheit/Celsius selection button on the back
Build Quality and Design
The design of the TP-19 is very similar to that of the Thermapen (and many other instant read thermometers). It’s simple and pleasant with an efficient use of space to pack all the features.
The build quality seems good, made from plastics and rubber, it uses similar materials to many other thermometers. Whilst we’ve only been able to use it a couple of times we expect it to last a while. Our ThermoPro TP-20 has lasted years of regular use.
Ease of Use
One of the best things about the Thermapen was the ability to open the box, flip open the probe and then be reading temperatures instantly. It’s not quite that quick with the TP-19. That’s because the TP-19 doesn’t have a battery included. This means you need to get a screwdriver, open up the back, get a AAA battery and then seal it up before you can use it. This might not seem like a huge problem, but if you don’t have a battery or screwdriver on hand then it suddenly becomes a huge inconvenience.
Once you’ve got the battery installed things become much better though. The flip motion turns the thermometer on and off intuitively. The lock button makes remembering readings super easy and having a convenient button on the back to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius is even done much easier than on the Thermapen.
What we like about the TP-19
- Fantastic value for money
- Super quick temperature readings
- Full of features
What we dislike about the TP-19
- Inconvenient not having a battery included

Overall, the ThermoPro TP-19 is a fantastic instant read thermometer that really does give the Thermapen a run for its money. It’s not quite as accurate and does have the slight inconvenience of not coming with a battery but its performance and fantastic range of features at an incredible price really makes it worth considering instead of a Thermapen.
