ROCCBOX Pizza Oven Review
At King of the Coals we feel as though we’re in a pretty good position to be able to review wood fired pizza ovens. We’ve had a home-made brick oven in the garden for over a decade now and have cooked (probably) thousands of pizzas on it and other pizza ovens. We’ve managed to test and review a range of the best pizza ovens on the market such as the Ooni (Uuni) Pro, the Blackstone pizza oven and even some of the ilFornino range of high end ovens that would be perfect for commercial use. But until now we had never managed to review arguably one of the best pizza ovens out right now, the ROCCBOX by Gozney. Well now you can finally read our ROCCBOX pizza oven review right here!

The ROCCBOX is the creation of British company Gozney who were one of the leading suppliers of commercial stone and fire ovens. They developed the Gozney ROCCBOX pizza oven due to a high customer demand for a commercial quality pizza cooking experience. Due to their history of developing high quality wood ovens, there has been a vast amount of quality engineering poured into the ROCCBOX and that can be seen straight away by the fantastic design which we’ll talk more about later.
There are a lot of great features that are included with the ROCCBOX but we’ll start with one of the biggest selling points – the dual fuel burners. A lot of the available pizza ovens on the market don’t currently come with more than one burner and if you want to mix things up with additional fuel sources you’re going to have to pay big. So one of the nicest things about the ROCCBOX is that it comes with ease to swap dual fuel burners straight out the box. You get a standard gas burner and a wood burner. (The included dual burners seems to be a limited time offer – check here to see if it’s still available)
Continuing from the last point, the ROCCBOX is virtually ready to use straight out of the box. Just set up the legs, attach the burner and get going.
When you are cooking you’ll realise just how well the ROCCBOX has been designed. When working well it can get up to 500°C / 932°F, more than enough to cook a Neapolitan pizza, in just 60 seconds.
The ROCCBOX also features an aesthetically pleasing safe touch silicon jacket. This not only keeps the outer layer of the oven relatively cool, making it about as safe as realistically possible, but it also helps to insulate the oven. This helps to keep the inner temperature consistent which many ovens often struggle with. A consistent and steady (and very high) heat will give you by far the best cooking experience. We would definitely recommend a consistent heat over a very high heat for beginners. It’s very easy to look away and realise your pizza is a bit too done when you’re dealing with temperatures in excess of 900°F!
The cooking area of the ROCCBOX comes in at 315mm x 340mm. If you want to know what that is in pizza sizes, you’d be looking at a realistic maximum of a 12 inch pizza.
In addition to these fairly comprehensive features there are also some nice little extras that Gozney have included.
For example, the ROCCBOX included a stylish, convenient and accurate side mounted thermometer for keeping an eye on the inner temperature of the oven. We’d recommend using a laser thermometer to get a more accurate reading, but this thermometer will definitely do the trick. After a while you’ll probably not even need a thermometer except out of curiosity as pizza cooking can be done through site and smell as much as through temperature and time.
You can also choose from a range of colors to make sure your new pizza oven matches your surroundings or just your personality!
Also included is the ROCCBOX pizza peel, a highly engineered peel that is built specifically for this oven.
The ROCCBOX also comes with a 5 year warranty so you can be sure that you’re making a sensible purchase.
And finally you’ll also receive a thorough set of instructions and links to Gozney’s catalog of recipes. (Although we also have a few little recipes that would make for some perfect pizza toppings!)
Build Quality and Design
Let’s firstly start with the build quality of the ROCCBOX. It’s made from a high grade stainless steel that can comfortably withstand the extreme temperatures that it is required to withstand. The base is made from a dense cordierite stone that manages to absorb heat quickly and maintain a high temperature to help you get the crispy bases. There are very few negatives with the build quality, it really goes to show that Gozney have been doing this a while as they’ve produced a superbly well made product.
In the same vein, the design is also both aesthetically pleasing and practical. The outer coating provides a refreshing alternative to the constant stainless steel and it doesn’t suffer from many of the harsh edges and rough design patterns of other portable pizza ovens, such as the Ooni (Uuni) 3.
I think the best aspect of the design is the simplicity of how it can be used, cleaned and then stored or transported. The foldable legs firstly create a naturally higher working environment, which helps a lot with maintaining control during your cook, but they also cleverly fold away in an instant to make the whole oven half the size and ready to pack away. The burners follow this same theme where they can be simply twisted to detach and then stored. This has to be one of the easiest to use pizza ovens available right now.
Ease of Use
In the last section we saw how easy it was to set up and take down the ROCCBOX. But in this section we’ll look a little more at how easy it is to use as an actual oven.
The main features of a good pizza oven are the ability for it to maintain an even and consistent cooking temperature and a high quality stone to enable you simple and easy management of the pizza of whatever else you’re cooking. The ROCCBOX has both of these. Like we mentioned before, the temperature is maintained very well, likely due to the good build quality and insulating outer cover. The cordierite stone is of good quality and makes sliding pizzas in and out a breeze. If you’d like to know more about what makes a good pizza stone, we’ve written a little about them here.
In addition to this, the included pizza peel is ideal for the size of the oven and makes an easy process even simpler.
What we like about the ROCCBOX
Very well designed – We love the design. It looks great, comes in multiple colors and I think it will blend in with many gardens quite well. The quick burner release and the folding legs are great features that add a quick but effective aspect of portability to it, or just make the storing of the ROCCBOX a little bit easier.
High quality build and performance – Obviously one of the most important features of a pizza oven is how well it cooks pizzas. The ROCCBOX produces fantastic pizzas with ease. It’s simple to use and with very little practice anyone can be cooking great tasting pizzas and more. This is likely down to the highly engineered shape and build of the oven that uses some of the best materials available to create a high performance cooking experience.
5 year warranty – Very few manufacturers give such a generous warranty now a days so to have one with your ROCCBOX is a very nice addition.
What we don’t like about the ROCCBOX
Quite expensive – This is probably our biggest problem with the ROCCBOX and is likely to be the one thing that puts people off the most – the cost! For a pizza oven that can cook a single 12 inch pizza at a time, the price is quite steep. It does what it sets out to do well but there are cheaper alternatives out there that can do virtually everything the ROCCBOX can.
Can sometimes take longer to heat up than we’d like – Considering that one of the most pushed features of the ROCCBOX is that it heats up super quick, we’ve come across a few cases of it taking considerably longer. Personally I don’t think this is as much of an issue as some. I’m used to slaving over a wood fired oven for hours to get the right temperature and flame consistency. But if you’re looking for a consistent 60 second heat up time then you could feel a bit disappointed.
Overall the ROCCBOX is a fantastic effort from Gozney. It’s well made, looks great, produces fantastic food easily and quickly with a choice of fuel sources and can be stored and transported about as easily as any other pizza oven out there. The cooking area of a 12 inch pizza is fairly standard and the price is quite high. But as an overall product we think this is one of the better options out there. It’s consistently highly rated and well reviewed, even making it into the number one spot for standalone outdoor pizza ovens by Serious Eats.
We think that some of the alternatives are worth a look, such as the Ooni Pro and even something a bit different, such as the Char-Griller Akorn Kamado grill. With a Kamado you can set it up as a pizza oven, a standard grill or even a smoker, they’re incredibly versatile.
However, if you’re simply looking for one of the best outdoor pizza ovens on the market right now, then the ROCCBOX is a very good choice and we have no problems with highly recommending it.
